for femme, effeminate, faggy, non-masculine and gender-non-conforming guys and the people who love them

Here’s an interesting article from afterelton.com. It’s nice to see a sympathetic article in a mainstream gay source.
Why can’t you just butch up?

Thx for sharing. Why is it necessary to insist on a biological basis for effeminacy?I was troubled by the claim that being effeminate/femme isn’t a “choice” but is caused when a male fetus doesn’t get enough androgen in utero. This choice vs. biology stuff is such a tired (and incorrect) opposition. Have you read Anne Fausto-Sterling’s Sexing the Body? I highly recommend it.

Not yet! Yeah, there were a bunch of problematic things about the article, and the one you mention is reminiscent for me of what happens when cis queer people assume that all of their strategies will be applicable to trans people. In this case, likewise, since it’s been a historically successful strategy for gay and lesbian people to lean on the biological basis of homosexuality, we tend to apply it in a scattershot way to lots of other things where it’s very questionable and also not super helpful.
I also am irritated by the idea that male effeminacy has to have some sort of overwhelming explanation, as if it’s inconceivable that a man should be feminine other than by force majeure. (Post on this subject to follow by and by!)
I guess, though, if it has any value it’s in calling the more ridiculous gender-reinforcing parts of pop evolutionary psychology into question (sort of ‘people always say that all this gender-normative stuff has a biological basis, well, here’s some non-gender-normative stuff that might as well’). But that’s a pretty slender thread.
